VANCOUVER ISLAND ATTRACTS thousands of new immigrants each year. Immigrant settlement agencies welcome newcomers and help with the transition to life in a new community and a new country. In January 2011, the Island’s leading immigrant settlement agencies announced the creation of The Vancouver Island Immigrant Welcome Centre Alliance.
Four agencies, the Inter-cultural Association of Greater Victoria, Cowichan Intercultural Society, Central Vancouver Island Multicultural Society and Campbell River Multicultural and Immigrant Services Association, came together to develop and sign a Memorandum of Understanding “to enhance the capacity of the agencies on Vancouver Island to provide services to immigrants and to build a welcoming and inclusive community.”
While the four member agencies continue to operate independently, the Island Alliance allows for greater collaboration between the staff, sharing of resources and an increase in capacity of each agency.
The four agencies use Immigrant Welcome Centre branding for Vancouver Island, a name chosen to reflect “who they are and what they do”. The common name and branding for these Island communities sends a clear message to new immigrants. The message – “Vancouver Island welcomes you!”
