This week, we celebrate our volunteers and their contribution to CVIMS as part of the National Volunteer Week 18-22 April 2021.
The National Volunteer Week theme for 2021, The Value of One, The Power of Many. It illustrates the importance of the collective effort of individuals in our communities. While COVID-19 has changed the way we work and volunteer, our volunteers have put tremendous effort into finding ways to reach out and help other community members.
Over the next few days, we will be highlighting these volunteers and their stories. Today, we’re highlighting Megan MacNeil’s story and passion. Here is what Megan has shared about her experience volunteering with the Central Vancouver Island Multicultural Society:
I started volunteering as an English Tutor with CVIMS in July. When I saw that CVIMS was looking for an English Tutor, I viewed it as an opportunity to teach again while also give back to my hometown community.
I received my undergraduate degree at the University of Victoria, with a major in Hispanic Studies and a minor in Commerce. I am entering my second year of law school at the University of Windsor in Ontario in the fall. Prior to law school, I taught English at a primary school in Spain. Although I enjoy studying law, I missed teaching English. I am enjoying tutoring one-on-one with my student as I am able to cater my lessons to his specific needs and interests. To my delight, my student loves reading history. I try to incorporate historical passages into our reading comprehension lessons. Although I will be returning to Windsor in the fall, I will continue to provide weekly Zoom tutor sessions to my student.
Upon graduating from law school, my goal is to develop an Immigration law practice either on Vancouver Island or Vancouver. I will be participating in a legal clinic in Windsor designed to advocate for Migrant Farm Workers’ rights. I look forward to broadening my comprehension of immigrant and refugee legal principles.
In my free time, I can be found mountain biking or hiking on Vancouver Island. I enjoy kayaking and swimming and reading historical nonfiction.
